Provancher's Fleabane is a small perennial with one or more stems, which measure up to 12 cm. The leaves are thin and form a rosette at the base of the plant; the flowers are white.

Distribution and Population

In Canada, Provancher's Fleabane is found only in southern Quebec. In the United States, it is found in only two locations, in New York State and in Vermont.

Provancher's Fleabane has a very specific habitat: it is found only on very humid calcareous rock or gravel located along rivers where there are freshwater tides, spray, ice and floods, and where the shore is treeless.

Provancher's Fleabane begins growing in May, after the ice has left and the climate has warmed up; it begins flowering at the end of June. The flowers last for a long time, often into the fall. Provancher's Fleabane is pollinated by insects. The seeds are dispersed by the wind, and possibly by water.

Loss of habitat, due to landfilling, and construction of ports, docks, railroads and other structures, is the main limiting factor for Provancher's Fleabane. An oil spill would threaten the Canadian populations.
